Earlier this month RuNet Echo reported [Global Voices report] on a Moscow municipal deputy who wanted to require all major social networks to store Russian user data on Russian soil. It seems his request has been heard, or at the very least, that Russian legislators think alike. As part of a series of revisions to a bill that recently passed Russia's lower house of parliament, starting on August 1, 2014 all distributors of online content will be required to store user data for six months following its creation in Russia.
These regulations [ru] are part of a package of “anti-terrorist” laws which exert greater government control over the Russian Internet — the law requiring [Global Voices report] that bloggers with 3,000 unique visitors register as mass media is part of the same package. The reason for the 6-month storage clause is simple: to force foreign internet companies to obey the Russian government's requests for information. Under the new regulations every website has to comply with law enforcement requests to hand over any user information stored in accordance with the rule. Unless a website or platform has servers physically located in Russia, however, they aren't likely to comply with Russian data subpoenas — in theory, the policy would not affect giants like Facebook and Twitter.

Non-compliance carries administrative fines of 50,000 to 300,000 rubles for the first offense, for organizations and companies. While this might seem like small change (around 8,500 USD) to entities like Google, further noncompliance can be punished with website shutdowns and filtering.

President Putin approves of the new law — on April 24, he spoke [ru] at a public forum on the media, where he said that foreign data servers containing “Russian information” should be moved to Russia. This might be partly due to security fears. During the same press conference he famously noted that the web was developed by the CIA and is still controlled by the agency (perhaps meaning to cite DARPA's involvement with the creation of the Internet).

With the new law the outlook for the RuNet is especially dour, at least according to some Russian bloggers. The requirements are essentially impossible to comply with when considering the global nature of the Internet, writes [ru] Egor Kotkin. This is why he is afraid that its implementation may be just a preparatory step in closing off RuNet from the rest of the world – a new Iron Curtain of sorts. Russian Internet guru Anton Nosik is on the same page. In a recent interview with TV Rain he spoke about the harshness of the new laws:

Russia is implementing a North Korean model. This isn't a Chinese model, it's a different model. Right now we are full speed ahead to Pyongyang, and there is no stop in Beijing on the way.

Russian Email Giants Yandex and Mail.Ru Bleed Passwords, Deny Hacking

Russia's largest email services, Yandex and Mail.Ru, were both hit with password leaks recently, resulting in millions of passwords published openly online and heated discussions in Russian web communities. The companies claimed the passwords were obtained through phishing scams on the users’ end rather than hacking attacks on their servers.
Yandex was the first to fall, when Habrahabr.ru, a popular tech and internet news forum, first published news of the password leak. User lagudal said he discovered the file with 1.2 million Yandex email logins and passwords on the Infosliv forum, a traditional leak dump space. Some of the other Habrahabr.ru users investigated the file and found their Yandex account information there, proving the database was at least in part real.
Such a massive password dump inevitably caused a commotion in the RuNet and invited witticisms based on Yandex's search engine slogan, “Найдётся всё” (Anything can be found), like this one from Twitter user Shulz:

Editors of Zuckerberg Calling, a Russian website about startup and internet business news, also tested out some of the email login and password pairs and found that in many cases the inboxes were real, but appeared forsaken or inactive. Even so, word quickly got around, and everyone set about to changing their passwords just in case. Helpful netizens set up a website where one could check to see if their Yandex email was among those dumped in the password leak.
Habrahabr.ru user Haoose decided to investigate the security and strength of the leaked passwords and published a ranked list of the most used ones. As is usually the case, the combination “123456” was at the top of the list, found in the database 37,821 times, and followed by security gems “123456789” and “111111”. Average email users, it seems, never change.

Speculation was rife about a hacker attack on Yandex servers or an internal leak, when Yandex's press-service finally denied any instances of hacking or leaking. Yandex confirmed that active account passwords only made up 15% of the published database, and the remaining 85% were inactive accounts, which had not responded to earlier password reset notifications sent out by the tech staff.
The active account information and passwords in the published database, Yandex said, were compromised by the users themselves, either as a result of virus attacks or phishing scams, and Yandex had launched verification procedures for these accounts. Yandex also insisted they never store passwords in plaintext, and use the necessary precautions for encrypting them.

We don’t store the passwords in cleartext (plaintext), we never transmit them on the Internet in cleartext and don’t open them up to third parties. Moreover, the majority of these passwords are too simple, and could not even be used [by our email subscribers] now.

Regardless, Yandex did reset the passwords of the 1.2 million compromised accounts, both inactive and active ones. VKontakte also suspended all pages of users who used leaked Yandex emails to register, asking them to change their passwords, VK's press-secretary George Lobushkin said on Twitter.

As a safety precaution, we've frozen all the accounts registered to the compromised Yandex addresses until their owners change their passwords.

The discussion about the Yandex “leak” had hardly died down, when another Habrahabr.ru user polym0rph found a different database with 4,5 million Mail.ru logins and passwords, published on the Bitcoin Security forum. Mail.ru analysed the database and concluded that 95% of the leaked accounts had been flagged as compromised previously, asked to change their passwords, and were restricted from sending emails or inactive. The overall context of the “leaked” database and the seemingly huge numbers of compromised accounts seemed suspiciously like the Yandex incident, which took place only hours before.
The almost simultaneous publication of two big password databases raises questions, but the arguments of Yandex and Mail.ru in reaction to the security scare seem valid: you don’t have to be a sophisticated hacker to crack a password like “123456,” and you don't have to hack the system, just hijack a few passwords.
In spite of these convincing arguments, some experts don't believe that the users’ data leaked out entirely through a fault of their own. The amount of stolen passwords seems too large to be collected by means of viruses and fishing, Andrey Zerenkov, senior information security consultant at Semantic, told Vedomosti.
Zerenkov acknowledged that such a massive dataset could be gathered manually over a period of several years, which does not explain why it was leaked at this particular moment.

Of course, this list could have been put together over a few years and by a group of people even, but then the motive of publishing this data is unclear. Usually such publications are a result of leaks, and not of long and arduous labor with a concealed purpose, usually of a criminal nature.

According to IT entrepreneur Anton Nossik, there could be several reasons for laying this data open to the public all at once. He supposes one reason might be that the Russian government is trying to prime public opinion for a new Internet law. The law in question might be an initiative about storing personal data (like the well-known data servers law) or a directive about a government-owned mail service.
While Nossik's conjectures are pure speculation, the Kremlin does enjoy skewing public opinion on matters of importance, and is quite good at it. Knowing how prolific Russian lawmakers have been lately on Internet-related matters, we only have to wait a little bit to find out.

Hacker who revealed aircraft can be hacked offloaded by FBI

Chris Roberts (World Labs' IT security expert) who recently identified risks in airplane in-flight entertainment systems became the target of FBI investigation himself.
On Wednesday he was pulled off by two uniformed officials and two FBI officers from a United Airlines Boeing 737-800 commercial flight. All of his electronics were also confiscated by the officials.
Chris Roberts is amongst world's leading security experts in counter-threat intelligence domain of the cybersecurity industry. He is also the one who blew whistle regarding the weaknesses he identified in USA 's in-flight tech systems. His findings were released in a series of reports on Fox News in a program titled “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.” The shows were on air from March 19th to April 15th, 2015.

Roberts is associated with the Colorado-based security intelligence firm “ One World Labs “ , which identifies vulnerabilities and threats before they are exploited.
This Wednesday night, Roberts was pulled off from a United Airlines flight right after the plane landed in Syracuse. Roberts had to spend next few hours with the FBI agents and police officers who questioned him regarding the in-flight cyberhacking, according to Fox News report .
This interrogation started just a few hours after a report on Robert's findings was published by Fox News. In the report Roberts stated:

“We can still take planes out of the sky thanks to the flaws in the in-flight entertainment systems. Quite simply put, we can theorize on how to turn the engines off at 35,000 feet and not have any of those damn flashing lights go off in the cockpit.” “If you don't have people like me researching and blowing the whistle on system vulnerabilities, we will find out the hard way what those vulnerabilities are when an attack happens.”

A GAO report published this Tuesday also backed the findings of Roberts and another security expert, who was also mentioned in the Fox News report.
He brought to notice of concerned authorities the risks associated with financial and intellectual property and client data with such types of attacks. He has been in talk with several different private as well as government clients to address the issue.
Roberts has also served as an in-house security expert and IT security, engineering, design and architecture consultant for numerous Fortune 500 firms. Until now, Roberts has worked in retail, finance, services and energy sectors.
Roberts quite regularly shares information about critical security issues that pose a threat to national security with various governmental agencies. It is also ironic that he met with FBI agents at least thrice after the agency requested him for his guidance on securing airplanes from cyberattackers.
However, on Wednesday night Roberts was treated rather differently. The FBI agents confiscated his electronic devices including his laptop and thumb drives along with his computer files and asked him to allow them access to his private data. They needed a forensic image of the laptop but he couldn't do that as the laptop was company-owned and had confidential client data, intellectual and research property. It was sensitive and encrypted data that couldn't be shared just like that.
Therefore, Roberts had no other choice but to consult his CEO and informed FBI agents that he cannot allow access unless they show a warrant, which they didn't had.
FBI agents revealed that fellow passengers were also questioned. Moreover, they also had forensically examined the airplane to identify if there were any tempered areas.
Roberts stated:

“You have one element in the FBI reaching out to people like me for help, but another element doing a hell of a job burning those bridges. Those of us who do threat research are doing it for the right reasons, and we work to build relationships with the intelligence community because we want to help them identify weaknesses before they become a problem.”

Roberts was travelling from from Denver to Syracuse to meet a defence contractor (who had invited him). He was supposed to speak at an aerospace conference regarding airplane systems' vulnerabilities.
Roberts is unsure about what's in store for him now and how will he create his presentation to the defence industry, when he doesn't have any of his electronic devices. So, he had to return back to Denver but ironic ironically he was pre-checked through TSA. He said:

“The TSA has already dug into my background and cleared me for the pre-check.

現在香港已非常明顯地向「一國」的體制沉淪，以政治為首，經濟、社會也都向中共國傾斜。香港每天發生的事，如鉛水、如港大「等埋首副」、如般含道砍樹、如七警事件忽然冒出要英國御用大律師提供意見、如昨天在九成意見反對下城規會通過由新世界發展伸延星光大道規劃申請……種種違反英治時代亦即《基本法》所定制度與規範的劣政無日無之。但香港社會怎樣反應呢？我們且不去理會那些扭曲事實、背離常識的言論，就從一般市民的反應來看，不就是「向下兼容自慰」嗎？不就是還有自己的安樂窩嗎？不就是「天津爆炸」這類事還沒有「打到嚟」因而事不關己的心態嗎？即使「打到嚟」，又怎樣？

自願放棄原有的價值觀

有人說：大亞灣不用擔心，大把有錢人陪葬，有得賺。有人說：你們太多負面情緒，心情不會好，世界多紛爭，不是我一句半句可以解決，獨善其身是對社會最好維護。有的針對港大校友關注組說：正義不是只有一種角度的，誰都不要覺得自己是對的，爭取的東西一定是好的。有的說：我支持民主和尊重程序，但衝擊只能導致更大的混亂。有的說：經濟是社會發展的根本動力，香港是彈丸之地，現實上不能不依靠大陸。言下之意，因為香港地小權小，一切不義的事都應該默許。

香港人大概在「向下兼容自慰」中習慣了，沒有危機意識，即使鉛水這麼嚴重的事，都可以淡然處之，對於甚麼學術自由、程序正義，是更覺離自己遠了。如果這才是香港人最普遍的價值觀，那就等於港人自願放棄過去英國免代價提供給我們的自由、法治、人權、尊嚴的價值觀，願意連體制也回歸一國了，那就是魯迅所說的奴性時代：或是暫時做穩了奴隸，或是想做奴隸而不得。

「西朝鮮」之稱最早出現應是2009年。當時「草泥馬」紅遍海內外網絡，有人問「草泥馬」來自哪裏時，得到一個神回覆：「西朝鮮。」網民當年把中國稱為西朝鮮，是因為中國和北朝鮮（北韓）的權力傳承、政治制度如出一轍。如今，越來越多網民稱中國為西朝鮮，不只是為了迴避當局的網絡審查，更因為如今在神化領導人、領導人嚴打政敵等方面，中國與北韓實在難分軒輊。

地緣政治影響短暫

政績不良引爆危機

曾有北京學者指出，對中國和其他威權國家來說，政府的合法性往往建立在政績表現的基礎上，包括經濟發展、道德表率和國家防禦，一旦政績表現不良（如經濟發展速度放慢、自然社會危機處理不當、出現重大腐敗案件）很容易轉化成政府危機。對於黨國一體的西朝鮮來說，政府危機就是共產黨危機，而學者所舉的引發政府危機的三大類事件都已出現，表現為股市暴跌、天津大爆炸、周永康等領導人的貪腐案等。

由此看來，中共舉辦抗戰勝利70周年閱兵，就是暴力救黨的重要一環。一是試圖宣傳中共是中國20世紀的救星以美化自己的權力正當性，甚至不惜讓毛澤東出現在電影《開羅宣言》的海報上；二是試圖喚起歷史的慘痛記憶，強化日本作為中國敵人、作為轉移國內矛盾焦點的目標；三是試圖向國民及世界展示軍力，宣示暴力救黨的決心和能力。

歐美領袖對出席中共閱兵敬謝不敏，就是不想為中共的暴力救黨背書。況且，這次閱兵對北京市民來說，已不只是過往大型活動的擾民問題，而是虐民問題，荒唐到上餐館吃飯、上公共廁所都要出示身份證登記，這是法西斯政權所為，還是紀念反法西斯勝利？可預見的是，中共暴力救黨的措施將覆蓋政治、經濟、社會等層面，而且越來越無所不用其極，但成效只會越來越微。
