President Obama Slams Sony for Canceling “The Interview”; Sony Blames Theater Owners (Updated)

President Obama, speaking at his year-end presser, said it was a mistake for Sony Pictures Entertainment to cancel screenings of “The Interview” after it received threats of violence, saying it could lead to an era of self-censorship in Hollywood.
“We cannot have a society in which some dictator some place can start imposing censorship here in the United States,” the president said, while also acknowledging he was sympathetic to Sony’s circumstances.
In the long term, he said, the move could have chilling effects on the country’s freedom of expression. “Imagine if producers and distributors and others start engaging in self-censorship because they don’t want to offend the sensibilities of somebody whose sensibilities probably need to be offended,” he said.
In remarks made to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, studio chief executive Michael Lynton said the situation was out of their control.
“The president, the press and the public are mistaken as to what actually happened,” he said in an interview with the network. “We do not own movie theaters. We cannot determine whether or not a movie will be played in movie theaters.”
Lynton added Sony still wants to find a way to distribute the film, but couldn’t find an online service that would be willing out of concerns it may also be attacked. “There has not been one major VOD distributor, one major e-commerce site step forward and say they would distribute this to us,” he said, adding, “we don’t have that direct interface with the American public so we need to go through an intermediary to do that.”
Sony does own its own streaming service called Crackle, which it acquired in 2006. It is also able to distribute the film on its PlayStation Store, which sells and rents movies through its game consoles and devices. It wasn’t clear from the CNN interview if Sony is considering using its own distribution platform.
Crackle referred inquiries to Sony Pictures, which has yet to respond to a question regarding the service. A PlayStation spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.
Industry observers said that Netflix and YouTube would be possible candidates to help Sony release “The Interview” online. “We are approached on virtually every unconventional release by the networks and studios and, as a matter of course, don’t discuss publicly the pitches, concepts or ideas that come our way,” Netflix rep Jonathan Friedland said in an e-mailed statement. YouTube reps have not responded to multiple requests for comment.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has determined the North Korean government ordered the malicious attack, resulting in the disclosure of personal information, private emails and confidential business documents that culminated in threats of violence.
The president said there’s “no indication that North Korea was working in conjunction with any other country,” in the attack, contradicting earlier reports the reclusive nation may have worked with China in the incursion.
Sony canceled its Christmas Day release of “The Interview,” a Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy about a fictional CIA plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, after the nation’s largest theater owners elected not to show the film, citing concerns for the safety of employees and patrons.
“I wish they had spoken to me first,” Obama said of Sony. “I would have told them, do not get into a pattern where you’ll be intimidated by these attacks.”
Lynton told CNN: “We definitely spoke to a senior adviser about the situation. Did we speak to the president himself …? The White House was definitely aware of the situation.”
The White House, which has closely monitored the incident, has been contemplating a “proportional response,” but the president declined to explain what that would involve.

Disconnection , North Korea Jim Cowie Someone Disconnects North Korea – Who?
Who caused this, and how? A long pattern of up-and-down connectivity, followed by a total outage, seems consistent with a fragile network under external attack. But it's also consistent with more common causes, such as power problems. Point causes such as breaks in fiberoptic cables, or deliberate upstream provider disconnections, seem less likely because they don't generate prolonged instability before a total failure. We can only guess. The data themselves don't speak to motivations, or distinguish human factors from physical infrastructure problems.
As the sun rises in Pyongyang, the national Internet disconnection continues. An outage of this duration is not without precedent for North Korea. As we've written before, countries that have a very limited set of international connections are more likely than their better-connected counterparts to suffer from nation-scale disconnections , regardless of the cause.
In this case, North Korea has significantly less Internet to lose, compared to other countries with similar populations: Yemen (47 networks), Afghanistan (370 networks), or Taiwan (5,030 networks). And unlike these countries, North Korea maintains dependence on a single international provider, China Unicom. That's a fragile state of affairs.

Yesterday, North Korea's connection to the internet had a bad day. Then it kinda sorta came back! But not before taking another vacation. It's like in-flight Wi-Fi over there.

hour outage in North Korea, reports that the Internet went dark there
again, just about an hour ago.
Then it came back.
Is the
related to some United States retaliation for the Sony hacks? Is it just
the DPRK's shoddy infrastructure? It's unclear. But whatever is wrong,
it's definitely not internet you want to be using.

Thanks to all for great comments and questions. Please see below for latest updates on the ongoing Egyptian Internet blackout, including some trace-based analysis and a few words about neighboring countries. After this morning we'll be closing this post out, and looking for the restoration. Hopefully sooner than later. –jim
Confirming what a few have reported this evening: in an action unprecedented in Internet history, the Egyptian government appears to have ordered service providers to shut down all international connections to the Internet. Critical European-Asian fiber-optic routes through Egypt appear to be unaffected for now. But every Egyptian provider, every business, bank, Internet cafe, website, school, embassy, and government office that relied on the big four Egyptian ISPs for their Internet connectivity is now cut off from the rest of the world. Link Egypt, Vodafone/Raya, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and all their customers and partners are, for the moment, off the air.
At 22:34 UTC (00:34am local time), Renesys observed the virtually simultaneous withdrawal of all routes to Egyptian networks in the Internet's global routing table. Approximately 3,500 individual BGP routes were withdrawn, leaving no valid paths by which the rest of the world could continue to exchange Internet traffic with Egypt's service providers. Virtually all of Egypt's Internet addresses are now unreachable, worldwide.
This is a completely different situation from the modest Internet manipulation that took place in Tunisia, where specific routes were blocked, or Iran, where the Internet stayed up in a rate-limited form designed to make Internet connectivity painfully slow. The Egyptian government's actions tonight have essentially wiped their country from the global map.
What happens when you disconnect a modern economy and 80,000,000 people from the Internet? What will happen tomorrow, on the streets and in the credit markets? This has never happened before, and the unknowns are piling up. We will continue to dig into the event, and will update this story as we learn more. As Friday dawns in Cairo under this unprecedented communications blackout, keep the Egyptian people in your thoughts.
Update (3:06 UTC Friday)
One of the very few exceptions to this block has been Noor Group (AS20928), which still has 83 out of 83 live routes to its Egyptian customers, with inbound transit from Telecom Italia as usual. Why was Noor Group apparently unaffected by the countrywide takedown order? Unknown at this point, but we observe that the Egyptian Stock Exchange ( www.egyptse.com ) is still alive at a Noor address.
Its DNS A records indicate that it's normally reachable at 4 different IP addresses, only one of which belongs to Noor. Internet transit path diversity is a sign of good planning by the Stock Exchange IT staff, and it appears to have paid off in this case. Did the Egyptian government leave Noor standing so that the markets could open next week?
Update (17:30 UTC Friday)
The Internet routing situation for Egypt continues to be bleak, with an estimated 93% of Egyptian networks currently unreachable. Renesys saw no significant improvements or changes in Egyptian international Internet routing overnight.
We have examined the takedown event more closely, looking at the sequence in which Egyptian service providers removed themselves from the Internet. The following plot shows the number of available networks for each of the significant providers, between 22:00 and 23:00 UTC last night (midnight to 1am Cairo time).
Our new observation is that this was not an instantaneous event on the front end; each service provider approached the task of shutting down its part of the Egyptian Internet separately.
- Telecom Egypt (AS8452), the national incumbent, starts the process at 22:12:43.
- Raya joins in a minute later, at 22:13:26.
- Link Egypt (AS24863) begins taking themselves down 4 minutes later, at 22:17:10.
- Etisalat Misr (AS32992) goes two minutes later, at 22:19:02
- Internet Egypt (AS5536) goes six minutes later, at 22:25:10.
Update (14:00 UTC Saturday)
The Egyptian Internet blackout continues into its second full day, with no substantive change overnight.
The government seems to have put itself in a tough position, as the
Egyptian working week begins tomorrow, and with it, incredible
disruptions to Egypt's economy and debt rating from the loss of Internet and mobile communications. With every hour that passes, the continuing comunications blackout is public evidence that they have utterly failed to regain control of the evolving situtation. 
This plot shows the round-trip delays packets experienced between New York and Egypt in the days leading up to the blackout. The blue background shows the number of successful traces that reached their destinations inside the country. There's some variance in latency ahead of the shutdown, but not more than we'd consider normal for Egypt; that is, we don't see evidence of throttling or intentional congestion of the national Internet connections before everything goes dark. They seem to have gone straight from plan A (block twitter and facebook) to plan Z (turn off the Internet) without stopping at any intermediate solutions. Iran took the more subtle throttle-and-monitor approach after their dubious elections in 2009.
We've also been asked repeatedly whether other countries in the region are readying a “kill switch,” and whether there are already outages in, for example, Syria. The answer, for now, is no. Syria's Internet connectivity appears to have been quite stable, as have other countries in the region, and nobody else has significant Internet connectivity problems so far.
I predict that Egypt's “kill switch” experiment will serve as a cautionary tale: the economic and reputational costs of the shutdown far exceed the benefits of regaining total information control.
We would also note that there appear to have been no significant disruptions to other countries' traffic passing through Egypt on fiberoptic cables such as SMW-4 and FLAG FEA.
As we've noted before , the majority of Internet connectivity between Europe and Asia actually passes through Egypt. The Gulf states, in particular, depend critically on the Egyptian fiberoptic corridor for their connectivity to world markets. Commodity traders are already nervous about the potential impacts on oil prices of any closure of the Suez Canal, but the potential risks to global Internet connectivity through Egypt are equally significant, and far less widely understood.
Are the folks at Davos thinking about this? They should be.

Syrian Internet Is Off The Air

Starting at 10:26 UTC on Thursday, 29 November (12:26pm in Damascus), Syria's international Internet connectivity shut down . In the global routing table, all 84 of Syria's IP address blocks have become unreachable, effectively removing the country from the Internet.
We are investigating the dynamics of the outage and will post updates as they become available.

Looking closely at the continuing Internet blackout in Syria, we can
see that traceroutes into Syria are failing, exactly as one would expect
for a major outage. The primary autonomous system for Syria is the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment; all of their customer networks are currently unreachable. Now, there are a few Syrian networks that are still connected to the Internet, still reachable by traceroutes, and indeed still hosting Syrian content. These are five networks that use Syrian-registered IP space, but the originator of the routes is actually Tata Communications. These are potentially offshore, rather than domestic, and perhaps not subject to whatever killswitch was thrown today within Syria. These five offshore survivors include the webservers that were implicated in the delivery of malware targeting Syrian activists in May of this year. |   |

Looking back over the last week, you can see that the routing of the
Syrian Internet has actually been pretty stable until today's wholesale
shutdown. There have been some brief up-and-down flickers affecting the reachability of a particular 12 networks, and there was one brief whole-country outage of less than ten minutes on 25 November. By the time that one was confirmed, the outage was over. It would be reaching to call that a “precursor event” or “practice run,” but that's a possibility. Also, some have asked about the submarine connectivity into Syria. Here's a map showing the three principal routes. There's also terrestrial connectivity into Turkey to the north, but those paths have not been reliable in recent months. |   |
Update (01:00 GMT, 30 Nov): The last 5 networks belonging to Syria, a set of smaller netblocks previously advertised by Tata Communications, have been torn down and are no longer routed. These blocks survived today's Internet blackout in Syria, but 12 hours after the onset, they, too are off the air. Afghan Government “Watering Hole”
The ThreatConnect Intelligence Research Team (TCIRT ) recently observed a targeted cross-site scripting (XSS) “drive-by” attack that leveraged a single content delivery network resource to distribute a malicious Java applet via nearly all of the major official Government of Afghanistan websites. The compromised CDN resource in question is a JavaScript file hosted at [http:]//cdn.afghanistan[.]af/scripts/gop-script.js

Note that the gov.af websites would not need to be compromised
individually for this attack to be delivered to visitors of the sites,
because it is the backend CDN infrastructure that is serving up the
malicious script. Li Keqiang: A Harbinger of Targeted Exploitation?
Judging by the last modified timestamp on the HTTP response of gop-script.js, which is Tue, 16 Dec 2014 08:07:06 GMT, this malicious CDN compromise was very recent in nature. In fact, it occurred on the very same day that China's Prime Minister Li Keqiang would meet with Abdullah Abdullah, the Chief Executive Officer of Afghanistan in Astana Kazakhstan, they would discuss infrastructure development and bilateral cooperation issues.
While these two separate events are not directly related, additional research into the status of ministerial and official government websites on or around the dates of notable Chinese delegations and or bilateral meetings may yield additional patterns of interest.
Java Malware Overlap
Upon closer inspection of the prepended malicious JavaScript code, one will notice the similarity in the update.javaplug-in[.]com naming convention and URL structure to the C2 domain java-se[.]com found in the Palo Alto Networks blog post Attacks on East Asia using Google Code for Command and Control and associated with Operation Poisoned Hurricane . However, the malicious document.write driveby URLs listed above both result in 403 Forbidden errors as of December 18, 2014.While the 403 Forbidden errors may seem like an analytic dead end, the TCIRT also identified a malicious Java applet submission to VirusTotal that confirms the nature of this malicious activity. This Java applet, SHA1: 388E6F41462774268491D1F121F333618C6A2C9A , has no antivirus detections as of December 21st. The applet contains its malicious class file at the path “jre7u61windows/x86/Update.class”. This class file downloads and decodes an XOR 0xC8 encoded Windows PE executable payload from [http:]//mfa.gov[.]af/content/images/icon35.png, hosted on the official Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs site, which was also affected by the gop-script XSS.
Using historic context archived within ThreatConnect, the TCIRT concluded that this Java applet is from the same source code as the applet SHA1: ADC162DD909283097E72FC50B7AB0E04AB8A2BCC , which was previously observed by the TCIRT at the Operation Poisoned Hurricane related URL [http:]//jre7.java-se[.]com/java.jar on August 15, 2014. This applet has the same class path, and downloads an XOR 0xFF encoded payload executable from the URL [https:]//amco-triton.co[.]jp/js/dl/in.jpg. Additional indicators and context associated with this particular Java driveby activity can be found in the ThreatConnect Common Community Incident 20140815A: java-se APT Driveby (shared October 02, 2014)
The Windows PE Payload
The XOR 0xC8 encoded payload downloaded from [http:]//mfa.gov[.]af/content/images/icon35.png decodes into the Windows PE executable SHA1: 72D72DC1BBA4C5EBC3D6E02F7B446114A3C58EABThis executable is a self-extracting (SFX) Microsoft Cabinet executable that is digitally signed with a valid certificate from “OnAndOn Information System Co., Ltd.”, serial number “1F F7 D8 64 18 1C 55 5E 70 CF DD 3A 59 34 C4 7D”. This same certificate was also used to sign the Java applet that downloaded this malware.
This executable drops the following files:
- SHA1: 2068260601D60F07829EE0CEDF5A9C636CDB1765 (dllhost.exe)
- SHA1: E2D93ABC4C5EDE41CAF1C0D751A329B884D732A2 (dbgeng.dll)
- SHA1: 5C8683E3523C7FA81A0166D7D127616B06334E8D (Readme.txt)
This backdoor connects to the faux Oracle Java themed command and control (C2) domain oracle0876634.javaplug-in[.]com. Note that javaplug-in[.]com is the same root domain found in the compromised version of [http:]//cdn.afghanistan[.]af/scripts/gop-script.js as [http:]//update.javaplug-in[.]com/o/j.js, confirming that this Java malware is in fact directly associated with the Afghan MCIT CDN XSS compromise.
Full indicators of this activity and a YARA rule to detect the malware certificate can be found in the ThreatConnect Common Community under Incident 20141217A: Afghan Government Java Driveby and signature APT_OnAndOn_cert.yara .
Conclusion
As the US and NATO reduce their troop levels in Afghanistan, China is posturing to fill the gap of influence that the west is leaving behind. With plans to facilitate multilateral peace talks with the Taliban and establish major transportation projects which aim to bolster the Afghan economy, Beijing has been eyeing Afghanistan as part of its broader South Asian strategy.By exploiting and co-opting Afghan network infrastructure that is used by multiple ministerial level websites, Chinese intelligence services would be able to widely distribute malicious payloads to a variety of global targets using Afghanistan's government websites as a topical and trusted distribution platform, exploiting a single hidden entry point. This being a variant of a typical “watering-hole” attack, the attackers will most likely infect victims outside the Afghan government who happened to be browsing any one of the CDN client systems, specifically, partner states involved in the planned troop reduction.
It is important to consider that corporate enterprises are not immune to this tactic, and this is not just a technique that is used by APT threat actors. If an enterprise's website leverages a CDN to speed up content delivery, unintended consequences must be anticipated. Fortunately, modern browsers now implement a security concept called “Content Security Policy”. As long as the server's response headers are configured properly, third party content may be restricted to originating from a narrow whitelist.
